Me in a Nutshell…

I am a slightly neurotic, one-handed 20-something on her first blogging adventure. My English degree deepened my love of reading and writing – fantasy books are my go-to but I love a bit of everything.

In the daily grind, I am a content writer in the world of content marketing, which means I get to create some cool stuff and learn about a range of topics, some interesting (like Alan Turing), some less interesting (like mortgages).

Post-uni I could never have predicted how much I would love to write – I didn’t think I had the creativity in me but crafting a golden sentence or becoming immersed in writing an article, story, or review, I feel I found my calling, even if no one reads it.

I thought I would struggle with blogging, but once I sat down to write, it turns out I have a lot to say. Much of the content on my blog is musings on my life, especially relating to my disability and how I manage/don’t manage the challenges and emotional backlash.

I definitely have a bit of a chip on my shoulder – I see others with the same disability, and so far they tend to appear more happy go lucky about the whole thing (‘It doesn’t really affect me, I’m just like everyone else’ attitude). To a degree, I feel the same, but in many ways I don’t and I believe this comes from the way I grew up and how my experiences shaped me, both positively (character building) and negatively (isolation and difference) most likely contributing to the chippy shoulder.

Writing through some of the disability issues that have stewed inside me for so long has helped me to share a side of me people shy away from, feel uncomfortable listening to, and generally wish I’d shut up about.

Writing also offers an opportunity to share my general musings on life, navigating being an adult and what the future holds. So far I haven’t shared much of my past because it is still too painful, this is something I will work towards.

Hopefully you will be entertained, feel a kinship at some point, learn about life with a disability or be comforted by the fact the are no alone in your struggles, disability or otherwise. As my life and disability are not the only things taking up my time, I also share recipes, reviews, and maybe even a tutorial or two.

I warn you all now I’m not particularly witty or funny but I hope you enjoy this journey with me, and if you don’t, my apologies in advance.

For better or worse, I will be Sharing My Past and Navigating My Future, I hope you come along for the ride.

Elisabeth

  3. Hi Elizabeth,

I greatly admire and respect your courage and daring. I find you inspiring. And I hope this note isn’t presumptuous or invasive.

I am a newbie leather crafter. I have stumbled across something in the Shetlands called a Makkin or a knitting belt.

My friends here in Colorado run a foundation that helps women who have had domestic abuse in their lives, or medical conditions (such as a stroke or cancer,) or battle depression. They teach them to knit, crochet and/or spin, based on what the woman wants to learn. And they meet once a week. It’s like a fiber support group. šŸ™‚

Here is where the leatherworking stuff comes in. I was researching Shetland Makkins a few months ago, because I am a history nerd, and thought I would like to try and make one. I have one ready, a prototype made of scraps. I am waiting for Horsehair to come in, which the traditional belts are stuffed with. Once we test it and know it works, I plan on making this group 10, for free, to make knitting easier and more enjoyable.

I am wondering if you want to check out some videos on youtube (search knitting belts.) If you want one, once I get them made, you can email me, I’d be happy to send it for free. I’d need an approximate waist measure, in cm or inches, to make the belt. And you’d need to let me know if you have issues with using buckles on belts. I could try using metal D rings and sewing industrial double-sided velcros instead if that would be easier.

I think the belt would take all of the pressure off your right arm, and maybe make it more relaxing to knit with.

    Warm Regards,
    Penny

    • Hi Penny, thank you for your kind words. Someone has just commented on my G+ post of this video and mentioned a knitting belt – I’ve never heard of it before and was just now googling it! I would absolutely love to try out your belt, I’m always trying to find ways to make knitting easier, I find it frustrating that I can’t design anything myself! Do you have an email address I can contact you at?

      Many Thanks,

      Elisabeth

  4. I have wanted to crochet for years now but thought because I only have one hand I’d never be able to do it. I’m 53 but hey, never too late to start. Have watched your youtube tutorials and am definitely going to give it a go now. Thank you so much for the inspiration šŸ™‚
